Istanbul

The Cuisine in Istanbul reflects its status as one of the world’s top cities; everything is available especially in the European part. Turkish cuisine is excellent, full of flavour and using the fresh produce for which the Country is famous. In areas close to the seas, the fish is particularly good. There is plenty of choice around every corner and here are just a few alternatives.

Balikci Sabahattin
This restaurant in Sultanahmet is famous for its mezes and fish. You select your own fish and it is cooked to your taste.

Fatih Damak Pide

Overlooking the Fatih İtfaiye Park near the Aqueduct of Valens, it is suggested it makes the best Karadeniz (Black Sea) pide on the Peninsular. There is no alcohol so drink the free pots of tea like the locals.

Matbah

The menu has many of the dishes that were served in the Ottoman Court over the centuries. Some of the offerings are less than common, goose as an example, and the menu changes with the season.

Antiochia
This restaurant serves the specialities of Anatolia, the Asian interior, and Ankara particularly. Expect different flavours, home-made yoghurt and a range of kebabs.

Meze by Lemon Tree
This restaurant near the Pera Palace Hotel has modern Turkish cuisine and its popularity makes booking advisable.

Zencefil
For a vegetarian alternative, try Zencefil. All the food is home-made and fresh. The name means ‘ginger’ and the restaurant makes its own ginger beer and ale.

Develi
This is a fast food restaurant in Samatya not far from Sultanahmet and with terrace roof seating giving views of Theodosius’ Great Wall and the sea.

Klemuri
Fish and dairy products dominate this restaurant’s menu and with a reasonably priced wine list it is certainly worth a visit.

The Kebab House
This place in Sultanahmet predates the Turkish Republic. It is a great place for lunch and just a short walk to Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque.
