Sundown and a cold beer or wine is a highlight of the day. There are some particularly nice places to enjoy a wonderful sunset.
Yalikavak
This village was once the main fishing port of Bodrum Turkey. Tourism has changed all that and there are few better places to watch the sun go down than this lovely village. The weather in Bodrum guarantees that you will not be disappointed any evening through the long weeks of summer.
This is the north west of the Bodrum Peninsula where there is slightly less development and hence fewer crowds. The gentle breeze tells you that the beautiful sea is here. The sandy beach is close to a number of fine restaurants, with fish the highlight, so wherever your accommodation, a visit to Yalikavak, the beach, a drink and meal as the sun sets is a must.
Turgutreis
At the west end of the Bodrum Peninsula there is a village that was renamed Turgutreis after the Ottoman admiral Turgut Reis who was born in the village in the 15th Century and who was killed in the Ottoman siege of Malta. There is a memorial to him marking the place where he set sail for the first time.
Turgutreis village was formerly called Karatoprak before the renaming just over 40 years ago. Sunsets here, a short distance from the Greek Island of Kos, are worth the drive from the centre of Bodrum. It is set in a fertile valley which make the waterfront restaurants even more appealing after a day on the long stretches of sandy beach.
Bodrum Harbour
The Harbour area remains a popular place to spend some time. There is nothing better than sitting with a beer or coffee and watching the sun go down. It is a great time for taking photographs in the summer. Sometimes the heat of the day doesn’t allow you to take shots as good as your eye is seeing because of a heat haze. Bodrum Castle
Bodrum Turkey’s major landmark is Bodrum Castle. It is a ‘must visit’ during a holiday to this thriving resort. The Castle dates back many centuries and was built by the Knights of St. John as a defence against enemies, primarily the Persians at that time. Indeed it never fell but when the Ottoman took Rhodes it was handed over as part of the settlement.
There is plenty to see around the Castle or you can just relax in the gardens and enjoy the general environment. It is a special place and when the sun sets it is particularly beautiful
